Friends Of Life

Sanskrit Mantras at the Beginning

1. THE AUM/OM MANTRA

This is Udhgeeth Pranayam (The 6th Main Pranayam). The two sounds Au & M should be pronounced in one continuous breath as 80% Au and 20% M. The lips will close gently as you say the M sound. This can be recited any number of times but a minimum of three times.

2. GAYATRI MANTRA

A powerful Nirankari (without contemplation on a Form) mantra.

- from the Yajur Veda 36.3; Rg. Veda 3.62.10

Meaning:
O’ Supreme Lord, Creator of the Universe and sustainer of all, we adore your pure radiant light, the source of all existence, manifested in the universe. We mediate upon your incomparable beauty, glory and creation. You are the embodiment of Knowledge (Gyan) and Light (Bhakti - Devotion), the remover of all sin and ignorance. Inspire all our thoughts, enlighten and guide our Intellect and let Us – the Soul (Atma) - realize thee, now and forever more.

3. MAHA MRITHYUNJAI MANTRA

This mantra is a life-giving mantra. When chanted with sincerity, faith and devotion, it can ward off death by accidents and fatal illnesses. It has been known to have a great curative effect for diseases pronounced incurable by modern medicine. It is a weapon against disease and this healing mantra removes the fear of death so that we become Mrithyunjai. Death itself becomes a simple and painless process through reciting and listening of this mantra.

- from the Mahanarayana Upanishad, from the Taittiriya Samhita of Krishna Yajurveda

Meaning:
Oh three-eyed Lord Shiv/Siva, I bow down to Thee. Just like the cucumber (in some texts the Urvaruka fruit is translated as the watermelon) when it attains fruition (ripens) it automatically plucks and separates itself away from the stalk/creeper. In the same way may I attain that sweet fragrance of Yours’ as nourishment to bring fruition into my life (through True Knowledge - Gyan - and Devotion - Bhakti) so that I may also pluck and free myself away from the cycle and bondage of birth (Samsara) and death. May I be fixed in Immortality, beyond the Seven Heavens (Saath Aasman/Swarg), which is Moksh, Nirvana, Mukti - Liberation of the Soul (Atma) and oneness with the Supreme Soul (Param-Atma).

4. GURU – SHISH (Teacher – Disciple) MANTRA

Contemplate the presence of your Guru, Prophet, Ishta (Primary Deity) or just Aum/OM as you recite this general Nirankari (without Form) mantra. Feel their presence and energies around you. Recite this mantra with positivity and belief.

Meaning:
May we be protected and nourished by the Divine Source. May we pursue our studies with vigour so that we become illumined. May there be no dislike or quarreling amongst us. May we act together for the common good and realize the ultimate Truth.

5. PRAYER TO THE DIVINE MOTHER GODDESS

- from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28

Meaning:
O’ Divine Holy Mother, from the unreal/untruth lead me to the real/truth, from darkness/ negative influences lead me to light/positive influences, and from death/ill health/ailments/misery lead me to immortality/health/vitality/happiness.

6. CONCLUSION MANTRA

Meaning:
May Peace, Peace and Perfect Peace reign in all Three Worlds/Realms – The Natural World (The Physical World – Bhur), The Supernatural World (The Spirit/Ghost World – Bhuvah), and The Spiritual World (The Heavenly Worlds – Svaha).

Sanskrit Mantras at the End

2. AUM MEDITATION: THE INFINITY SHLOKA

Meditate on Pranav (also known as AUM) and hence this Mantra can be used during Pranav Pranayam (the 7th Main Pranayam).

RECITE THIS MANTRA IN YOUR MIND OR HEAR IT ONLY.

- from the Isopanishad

Meaning:
This is a mathematical mantra (Gunith Mantra) that was realised at the beginning of creation by our ancient and great Rishi Munis (Sages, Seers, Prophets). It means that this Universe is Infinite and God is Infinite. When you add or subtract the Infinite (Complete Whole) from the Infinite (Complete Whole) what remains (Equals) is The Infinite (Complete Whole).
The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because the Supreme Being is completely perfect, all emanations from the Source/Supreme Energy, such as the phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced of the complete whole is also complete in itself. Because the Source is the complete whole, even though so many complete units emanate from the Source, The Supreme Energy remains the complete balance.
The root cause is false ego and false interests. The material world is finite, so if anybody gets some property, others are deprived of it. When human beings are taught that they are physical bodies, they all try to get requirements of the body and compete against one another for this. Actually the real self is neither physical body nor material body. Being enveloped by the material energy they wrongly misconceive. So the Indian Rishi-Munis first tried for material property and afterwards they found it would lead to extreme suffering. Actually the requirement is Complete Bliss, Who is God - Purna-sukh - Absolute Bliss or Infinite Bliss. Infinite Sat-chit-ananda is Infinite Bliss. If the attention of human beings is diverted towards Infinite bliss and if anybody gets this Absolute Bliss, others will not be deprived of it. According to differential calculus mathematics - Infinity minus or plus Infinity is Infinity. Infinite jivas can get Infinite bliss. There is no possibility of clashing. When persons lose their interest for material acquisitions, they become indifferent to it and clashing with others for such things cannot occur.

3. AUM MEDITATION: PART OF THE SIVA-SHADAKSHARA STOTRAM

Meditate on Pranav (also known as AUM) and hence this Stotram can be used during Pranav Pranayam (the 7th Main Pranayam).

RECITE THIS STOTRAM IN YOUR MIND OR HEAR IT ONLY.

Meaning:
May our salutations ever be unto Omkara upon which the Yogis/Rishis/Munis fix their minds constantly in deep meditations and which satiates all desire and sanctions eternal salvation.

4. SHANTI-PAATH: PRAYER FOR PEACE

Meaning:
May peace be unto the heavens, the sky, the mid region and earth,
May peace be unto the waters, the forests/trees and plants/medicinal herbs,
May peace be unto All the Gods (Trinity and its reincarnations/Avatars), demi-Gods (Angels or Devi-Devtas), Prophets, Gurus and Saints,
May peace be unto all the bounties of Nature (Prakriti)
May peace be unto Knowledge (Gyan)
May peace be unto all creation and may mankind enjoy eternal peace
May such peace from the Source (Almighty GOD) come to us.
May GOD bestow upon us peace in the spiritual domain, peace from the worldly elements and peace from the supernatural elements.

Other Sanskrit Mantras

1. A MAHAMANTRA – HOLY INVOCATION

Meaning:
Aum Brahma (Supreme Brahman) is the Final Truth
Beyond Form and Beyond Birth
Single and Undivided
All Pervasive, Omnipresent
Blessings Incarnate
To You, Oh Supreme Source, I surrender.

God is an Effulgence, an Energy, A supreme Consciousness. The Final Truth is that God is formless and “describe-less”. In the Vedas, the final conclusion after all attempts were made to describe GOD was “Neti-Neti” – “neither this nor that”.

There are two MAIN paths, BOTH ARE RESPECTWORTHY AND CORRECT:

1. GOD can be worshipped as an Akar (Form) and with Guna (Attributes) – this is the Dvaita (Dual) form of worship/philosophy or bhakti (devotion). Where there is the devotee (sevak) and his/her God (Swami).
2. GOD can be meditated upon as Nirakar (Without Form) and without Gunas (Attributes) – this is the Advaita (Non-Dual) form of worship and philosophy. Here you see yourself as a part of the whole, yet as One.

THE PRAISES OF BOTH PATHS ARE SUNG AND GLORIFIED IN THE VEDAS. THEREFORE LET’S NOT QUARREL, JUST BELIEVE.
