Throughout my childhood and my teenage years, I had seen my father practice Pranayam for 2-3 hours along with his daily Puja, which included bhajans and kirtans very early in the morning. The ambience was great in our house, but what I still don’t understand is the fact that why my brothers/sisters or I were never approached by my father to practice Pranayam. May be he knew that we used to hide and laugh when he was practicing ‘Kapal bhati’ or was it that he thought we wouldn’t understand it or be interested in it? Strangely enough, my whole family started practicing Pranayam after my father’s demise! Had we shown the slightest interest whilst he was alive, we would have made him very proud. He always had a very placid character and we couldn’t understand then that how he could always be so radiant and never suffer from any ailments or get angry or irritated and most of all have so much patience!
Sadly, my father left us on 1st August 2005 at the age of 95 - that too without any ailment or suffering! For some unknown reason, I started taking great interest in Pranayam during the winter of 2005 and watched Swami Ramdevji’s Programme on Aastha TV (Sky Channel 808). Earlier, I had been going to Yoga Classes – more of the postural kind with very little Pranayam included in the package.
When Swami Ramdevji came to hold Shivirs in the UK we were thrilled. It was then that I decided that I wanted everyone that I knew to benefit from this ‘logical’ breath orientated practice of Pranayam and decided to attend the Teacher’s Camp of 2006 that they announced at the Harrow Shivir! Slowly, as I got better and better at practicing Pranayam, I even overcame my ailment of Hypothyroidism, though not completely (about 80%). I believe if I have a clear year without a flare up, I would be completely cured (its been 6 months since I haven’t had any symptoms!).
My experience in Haridwar was somewhat different to what I had anticipated but not totally disappointing. I couldn’t wait to get back to London and start teaching, although I had already started teaching in small groups at my workplace in May 2006 during my Lunch hour.
